I could go on about how his performance was the only thing that made it possible for me to sit through that Kevin Costner abomination, Robin Hood, Prince Of Theives. That was the first time I had ever seen Mr. Rickman on film, and all I could think was, "This actor is SO funny! He's the only good thing about this awful film!" The next time I saw him was in Sense and Sensibility. His performance as Colonel Brandon really knocked me out. There was so much going on beneath the surface of this character, and Mr. Rickman brought it all to life with the most subtle of looks. This was the performance that made me need to see more of his work. I started seeking out his other movies. Next came Truly, Madly, Deeply. I cried like a big, babbling idiot. Again, I was struck by the subtlety of his acting. The final nail in my coffin was Close My Eyes. I just happened upon it one evening when it was airing on Bravo. There is one scene, where Sinclair realizes his wife, Natalie, is lying to him about a weekend "business trip." The look on his face, perplexed and hurt but holding it in, brought my world crashing down. My heart broke for him. That one look was so devestating. I wanted to throttle Natalie for making Sinclair feel that way. And I don't think any other actor could have pulled that off. I don't think anyone else could have been so believable.
